Dr. Zanotti has been in practice at The Center for Orthopedics since 1997. He specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopic and reconstructive shoulder surgery. He received his fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopy at the renowned Southern California Orthopedic Institute of Los Angeles, California.

During his fellowship he was trained in advanced techniques to treat shoulder injuries by a preeminent specialist in shoulder arthroscopy and joint reconstruction. He’s been doing minimally invasive rotator cuff repair since 1997 – far longer than most orthopedic surgeons.

Dr. Zanotti also performs a state-of-the-art procedure known as a reverse total shoulder, for patients with shoulders that previously might be considered non-reconstructable. He is one of the first surgeons in Ohio to perform this procedure.
In addition to his expertise in all types of shoulder surgery, Dr. Zanotti is one of only two board-certified orthopedic surgeons in the area who has earned subspecialty certification in orthopedic sports medicine from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

“Sports medicine is constantly evolving, ” he says.

“We treat more than just young team athletes. If a 50-year-old man tears a rotator cuff playing basketball on the weekend with his buddies, I consider that sports medicine now. Half of my practice is that kind of community-based sports medicine. It’s weekend warriors of all ages —active, healthy people out doing their thing, who aren’t ready to hang up their cleats yet.”

Dr. Zanotti completed his orthopedic surgery residency as well as his general surgery internship at the University of Michigan School of Medicine and earned his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, The Ohio State Medical Association, and the Lorain County Medical Society.

William B. Stanfield, MD

Dr. Stanfield has been in practice at The Center for Orthopedics since 1997 and serves as the Director of the Center for Bone and Joint Reconstruction at UH Elyria Medical Center . He is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement, sports medicine and arthroscopy. Throughout his career, Dr. Stanfield has continued to focus on joint replacement. He has studied various advanced techniques and utilizes the latest technology for joint replacement surgery, which enables him to provide his patients with a personalized surgical plan that most closely fits their individual anatomy. One such technology is Stryker's Mako SmartRobotics™ System, an innovative robotic-arm that assists in customizing your total knee, partial knee, and total hip replacement procedures. He was one of the first surgeons in Northeast Ohio to offer his patients this advanced technology.

According to Dr. Stanfield, “WIth Mako, we can provide each patient with a personalized surgical experience basedd on their specific diagnosis and anatomy. Using a virtual 3D model, Mako allows surgeons to create each patient's surgical plan before entering the operating room. During surgery, we can validate that plan and make any necessary adjustments while guiding the robotic arm to execute that plan.”

He is a member of the Ohio State Medical Association, Cleveland Orthopaedic Society, Lorain County Medical Society as well as the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS). This prestigious medical specialty society promotes the advancement of hip and knee care through education, advocacy and research.

Dr. Stanfield was raised in Vermilion, which is about 10 miles from The Center for Orthopedics. He received his doctor of medicine degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed his orthopedic surgery residency and general surgery internship at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. He has been in the same practice for nearly 25 years and in that time has performed more than 5,000 joint replacements.

Dr. Zanotti has practiced at The Center for Orthopedics since 2003. He is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopy. In fact, he is one of only a few board certified orthopedic surgeons in the area who has earned subspecialty certification in orthopedic sports medicine from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Although Dr. Zanotti has treated professional athletes, he doesn’t limit his definition of “athlete” to professional or even high school or college players. “I consider anyone an athlete – from five to 85 years old – who enjoys participating in certain activities and wants to continue doing them. These are the patients I enjoy taking care of most,” he explains.

Dr. Zanotti’s interest in sports medicine grew out of his own experience as an athlete. “I played basketball in college, so I’ve always been around athletes,” he said. “And I’ve seen many injuries just from playing a variety of sports, so sports medicine was a natural interest of mine.”

“My fellowship training enables me to do many things arthroscopically, or through the camera,” he explains. “Nearly all of my shoulder procedures are done arthroscopically, as well as many elbow, wrist, knee, hip, foot and ankle procedures.” He also performs the new Zimmer® Patient Specific Instruments knee replacement. This innovative procedure fits an implant to the patient’s exact anatomy, which helps improve post-surgery recovery and longevity.

In addition to his work with The Center for Orthopedics, Dr. Zanotti serves as the team physician for Clearview High School in Lorain, Ohio. He also enjoys traveling in the U.S. and abroad to teach other orthopedists the latest arthroscopic techniques. He has conducted numerous presentations at national and regional medical meetings and has been a course instructor at Penn State University’s Department of Orthopedics as well as Arthrex Surgical Laboratory in Naples, Florida.

Robert J. Berkowitz, MD

Dr. Berkowitz joined The Center for Orthopedics in 2007. He is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in surgery of the spine, and was the first surgeon in Lorain County to perform a cervical disc replacement. Dr. Berkowitz was chief of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Andrews Air Force Base’s Malcolm Grow Medical Center. While in Washington DC he ran a clinic at the Pentagon where he treated the nations top leaders and military personnel. Additionally, he served in Operation Enduring Freedom in the Middle East, caring for many American soldiers, airmen and seamen.

When it comes to treating spinal conditions Dr. Berkowitz employs many non-surgical options including physical therapy, injections, referrals to pain management, chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage therapy to help patients heal non-operatively. However, if a patient ends up needing surgery, Dr. Berkowitz has extensive training in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and the use of a cutting edge device called an ultrasonic bone scalpel. With these techniques patients often have incisions less than an inch long and are discharged home on the same day of surgery with minimal pain. “The majority of my patients do not have surgery,” he explains. “But when surgery is the best option, I am trained to perform the most advanced surgical techniques.”

He was chief resident of his orthopedic surgery residency at the Akron General Medical Center Department of Orthopedics in Akron, Ohio. Dr. Berkowitz received his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He also holds a master of science degree in exercise physiology from the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Berkowitz is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, North American Spine Society, The Ohio State Medical Association and the Lorain County Medical Association.

Dr. McCoy is a Cleveland native who joined the Center for Orthopedics after 8 years in practice, most recently serving as division head of orthopedics at Marymount Hospital. He is a board-certified surgeon with a subspecialty certification in sports medicine. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Miami University and completed his medical training at the University of Cincinnati.  After graduating from residency at Northwestern University, Dr. McCoy completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.

During his training, he had the rewarding opportunity to serve as assistant to the team physician for the Chicago Blackhawks, as well as the Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers, and Indians. After completion of his training, he served as the team physician for Cleveland State University, the Cleveland Monsters, the Lake Erie Captains, and 5 area high schools.

Dr. McCoy is devoted to helping his patients and has published research pertaining to rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, meniscal tears, customized total knee replacements, and Achilles tendon injuries. His book chapter publications include cartilage transplantation, ligament injuries of the knee, and injuries to the patella and patellar tendon. He has worked as a clinical assistant professor at Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.

His surgical practice includes arthroscopy of the shoulder and knee, total joint replacements, fracture repair, and treatment of soft tissue injuries. From a non-operative standpoint, he cares for a range or musculoskeletal injuries from minor aches and pains to fractures and arthritis.

Acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries ranging from those sustained while playing sports to chronic conditions such as arthritis are his expertise.

His father James E Ohliger Jr has been practicing family medicine in northeast Ohio for over 30 years. He decided to follow his footsteps in the field of medicine. “Growing up and watching my father practice I have learned to always put the patient first. This exposure has provided me with upmost appreciation for my patients. My goal as an orthopedic surgeon is to educate patients about treatment options whether it be surgical and nonsurgical modalities. Together we will come to a treatment plan that will be individualized based on patient activities, goals of return and many other factors.”
